Muddy Caves and a Mansion

posted by Carol

Last weekend was a good one :)  Shane and Mathan headed out to Alabaster Caverns in Woodward, OK for their first Boy Scout campout with Troop 217.  They had a full and grimy day of spelunking on Saturday.  Apparently they came out so dirty that they just threw their clothes in the garbage when they were done.  Sound like fun, doesn't it?

Well, the girls and I wanted to do something more...umm...girly (and sanitary). So we had some good (clean) fun in the city.  I took them to Kaiser's Ice Cream for lunch and, of course, homemade ice cream.  We were thrilled to see that salted caramel was on the menu for the day.  Shane and I visited Kaisers a few weeks back when we celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary, and found out just how amazing that salted caramel ice cream can be.  So we quickly gobbled that down and all declared how completely stuffed we were.  Kaiser's is definitely a top dessert spot on our list of places to go and things to do in OKC.

After lunch we headed just down the road to the Overholser Mansion.  This is another place that Shane and I finally were able to check out on our anniversary weekend, and, after touring it, we both agreed that it was something that we had to take our girls to see.  Going into the mansion is like stepping back in time, and, as all of the furnishings in the home were left there by the original occupants (est.1903), you feel as if you're snooping through someone's things while they're away for the afternoon.

The girls, of course, didn't care terribly about the history, but were taken with just how grand, romantic, and Victorian it looked.  Such a treat for the eyes and the imagination.  Lots of "ooh-ing" and "ahh-ing" came from those two.  Molly was so inspired that when we got home she immediately went to her room and found her laciest dress in her box of dress-up clothes and wore it for the rest of the day.  Wish I would have thought to take a picture!

So, the weekend was a success for all.  The boys arrived home without any scrapes and bruises, feeling accomplished and manly.  We girls were completely satisfied that we got the better end of the deal on our weekend.  Now, we're thinking toward what we'll do the next time we have a girls only weekend.
